Widely considered Ibn 'Arabi's most important and comprehensive work, the Fusus al-Hikam (The Bezels of Wisdom) was dictated to his disciple in his later years. According to Ibn 'Arabi, the Prophet Muhammad appeared to him in a vision in Damascus and handed him this book, saying, "Take it and bring it to people so that they might benefit from it". The text examines the singular characteristics and "wisdom" displayed by 27 different prophets mentioned in the Quran, from Adam to Muhammad. Each chapter is a "bezel" (a gem setting) containing a specific facet of divine wisdom.
