The slimline SCPH-70000 series marked a nuclear winter for the BIOS. Sony, furious at the popularity of modchips and FMCB (Free Memory Card Boot), rewrote large sections. The BIOS version 2.00 (found in early slims) introduced a fatal flaw for hackers: it fixed the “DVD Player exploit” that allowed code execution. More insidiously, it changed the (mechanical controller) routines to actively destroy modchips by sending over-voltage signals to the BUS.
