    He spent three months in near-total isolation, filling his days with splitting wood and tending to chores. But as the bitter winter set in, the nights became a period of intense, cathartic creativity. In marathon 12-hour recording sessions, Vernon poured six years of "heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt" into the nine songs that would become the album. He used basic equipment and multitracked his own voice, creating the layered, falsetto-driven sound that would become his signature. He named the project Bon Iver —an intentional misspelling of the French for "good winter" ("bon hiver")—as a nod to the transformative period of his life.
