FreeHand's journey began in 1988 when it was created by Altsys Corporation and licensed to Aldus. The mid-1990s brought a turbulent twist: a merger between Aldus and Adobe led the Federal Trade Commission to order FreeHand sold back to Altsys to preserve market competition. Shortly after, Macromedia acquired Altsys, birthing "Macromedia FreeHand" and releasing versions 5 through 11 (also known as FreeHand MX).
