The Oromo language (also called Afaan Oromoo or Oromiffa ) is the most widely spoken Cushitic language in the world and one of the five largest native languages in Africa. It is the mother tongue of tens of millions of people across Ethiopia, northern Kenya, Somalia, and beyond. The phrase – “a psychology book in the Oromo language” – accordingly expresses an urgent need as well as a broad future goal. This article examines why psychology materials in Oromo are so important, what currently exists, what obstacles lie in the way, and how educators, writers, and communities can work together to build a stronger future for psychological knowledge in Oromo.
