What made Project Spade extraordinary was its international scope. By examining Brian Way's customer records, authorities in over 50 countries were able to identify and track down his clients. This resulted in 348 arrests worldwide. The list of those arrested was shocking and included not just anonymous individuals but also 40 school teachers, nine doctors and nurses, nine clerics, and even six law-enforcement personnel. The investigation's most critical success, however, was the identification and rescue of who had been victimized. Many of these children were at direct risk of further abuse from the clients who had purchased the material. Brian Way was charged with 24 offenses, including child pornography, and his company was designated as a criminal organization—the first time such a designation was used in Canada for a child pornography case. His mother, Sandra Waslov, was also named as a co-conspirator.
