This was exacerbated by pervasive negative stereotypes of the Madurese, who were often labeled as kasar, sombong, and suka membawa senjata tajam (rude, arrogant, and fond of carrying sharp weapons) due to their "carok" tradition. On the other hand, Madurese may have felt unwelcome or looked down upon, further deepening the divide.
