The story tracks three crime families from the 1940s colonial era through the turn of the millennium. It focuses on Shahid Khan's early exploits, his son Sardar Khan’s relentless quest for revenge against coal magnate Ramadhir Singh, and the rise of Sardar’s son, Faizal Khan.
Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1, released in 2012, sets the stage for the larger narrative. The film is loosely based on real-life events and draws inspiration from the infamous Wasseypur gang wars. The story revolves around Sultan Mirza (played by Adil Durrani), a notorious gangster who controls the coal mafia in the small town of Wasseypur. His life takes a dramatic turn with the introduction of Ramakant Pandey (played by Vijay Kashyap), a local politician with ties to the underworld.
