The novel "Bumi Manusia" has a history of being seen as subversive. After its publication in 1980, it was in 1981, along with its sequel, "Anak Semua Bangsa". The regime accused the books of spreading Marxist-Leninist ideology, a dangerous charge during the anti-communist purges of the New Order era. Distributing or possessing the book could lead to legal consequences. It wasn't until after the fall of Suharto in 1998 that the ban was effectively lifted, allowing the book to be freely read and discussed.
